Weddings ain’t what they used to be!
November 18, 2024Five Wedding Trends to Watch for in 2023
November 18, 2024There’s no escaping the fact that summer is over. As a Stark might put it… Winter is coming.
While the warmer months are more popular for tying the knot, winter weddings are catching up.
One particularly significant reason why is that it is possible to hire venues at a reduced rate as long as your wedding is not too close to the holiday season. If you are planning on getting hitched in the colder months, we’ve got you covered — even if your dress doesn’t! Here’s a round up of the trends from the recent 2017 Bridal Week.
Make-up and the continued triumph of rose gold
Designers sent models down the bridal runway with dewy, natural looking make-up. Think perfect skin, a flush of color on the lips and subtle smudged liner. Alternatively, they went old old Hollywood glamour with pale skin and bold red lips.
One thing that stuck out — rose gold eyes. Rose gold for everything — weddings included — is not going away. On the one hand, rose gold eye shadow looks lovely and works with both light and dark skin. On the other hand, you’ll probably be bored of rose gold by next year that it might be worth giving this one a pass.
Show some skin
Kate Middleton popularised wedding frocks with long sleeves. That trend hasn’t gone away — although the sleeves are likely to be embellished and striking. But the latest bridal fashion is all about flashing the flesh, either on the back or front.
Backless gowns with detail at the base of the dress were prevalent. So too were dresses with deep necklines. A slightly more demure way of being on trend without flashing too much skin — which is not ideal in the colder months — is the off the shoulder gown. This is bang up to date, but is more inherently romantic looking than a plunging neckline.
Crowing glory
Popularised by Coachella about 5 million years ago… flower crowns have been around for what seems like forever. It’s not hard to understand their appeal for weddings. Flowers are romantic and the flower crown is less formal than a veil. However, the Coachella vibe has also inspired updates on the trend. Hair jewelry, twists, braids and breachy waves are all popular looks. Nice!
Here today, gone tomorrow?
The bridal trends that stick around are the ones that at least pay some homage to our ideas of tradition. That’s despite the fact that the tradition for white gowns started with Queen Victoria. Before that, women got married in their best dress — the color was immaterial. But white as a color is so entrenched it seems unlikely that bright, daring dresses will ever replace it — at least here in the English speaking world. Naeem Khan showcased a stunning citrine gown this Bridal Week. Can’t see it catching on, but… love it!
Trends we’re not loving are crop tops, pantsuits with trains and over the knee bridal boots. Nope! Sometimes the festival wear is better at a…umh… festival! Hey, you do you. But maybe scroll through some old photos of you in double denim with half a million teeny butterfly clips in your hair and put the OTK wedding boots back down… Just a suggestion!
