The 10 Hottest Wedding Trends – Most Popular
November 18, 2024Giving gifts can be a hard task. That’s particularly true for weddings. If a couple has a registry then sure, finding something they like is easy — but only if you can afford it. Unfortunately some couples treat a registry like a lottery and load it with expensive items. At other times, you don’t get round to shopping before all the registry gifts have been bought. Some couples prefer cash — hey, everyone appreciates money! That can be tricky, especially if you are on a budget.
We have all read horror stories of couples writing nasty notes complaining about gifts or the size of the cash donation they received. The truth is, nobody you invite to your wedding has to give you anything but their company. Gifts are customary, sure, but they are not obligatory.
Having said that, some gifts are just plain odd. We’ve rounded by some of the strangest ones received by couples on their wedding day.
It helps to be prepared… I guess
Ours was a relationship advice book for couples over 50. Fiancé and I just turned 30 and 32. Don’t know who gave us that, no name on gift. Weird!
A pack of unbranded nappies. We didn’t have a baby, and I wasn’t pregnant.
The gift that keeps on giving
We got a used cookbook (that had pages ripped out, things added, highlighted things, etc) in a baby shower bag. It was a little obvious they grabbed the first thing they could think of out of the house. It has some good recipes in it, but definitely a little odd.
At least he tried…
I got a set of ugly dishes with Mexican sombreros all over them. To be fair, my brother thought he was giving me what I wanted. I had asked for Fiestaware. I don’t think that he knew that Fiestaware is not fiesta themed.
What are you trying to tell me?
Not married yet, but someone sent us a dog-leash. We don’t own a dog.
A framed black and white photo of a graveyard
My uncle got us a book on how to deal with divorce.
But is it art?
I think our weirdest one was a big black glass monkey sculpture. It was from my husband’s friends and afterwards one of the wives pulled me aside, apologised for such a strange gift and said that they’re never letting the boys go shopping on their own again and that we were welcome to return it.
Regifting gone awry
I got towels with the name “Mary” on them. My name is not Mary…
My husband was married before he met me. For his first wedding, his mother gave the bride some very nice silk underwear, for her ‘trousseau’. Move on many years. Husband and bride split up, he moves countries and meets me. My mother-in-law-to-be then writes to ex-bride to ask for the silk underwear to be sent back to her… so that it can be given to me.
Cheap at the price!
A package of paper plates.
A giant jar. Just a jar.
My wife’s friend bought us an ashtray even though she knew we both weren’t smoker
My husband’s wealthy uncle gave us a used coffee thermos and a yellow bath towel. Very strange. We found out years later that he gave my husband’s brother the same thing at his wedding 6 months after ours.
One single tea light — wrapped.
